“I was intrigued by the many directions people and cars go at this site and by the graphic and signage signals. I asked myself if these directions could be more creative, more playful, and be tied to musical directions. I was also interested in creating a slightly dramatic scene where musical activities such as performances and intermissions could take place. With shapes like ‘hold,’ ‘sustain,’ ‘crescendo,’ ‘stacatto,’ [and] 1/4, 1/2, and whole rests, the work communicates directions to pedestrians and motorists such as ‘stop,’ ‘move along steadily,’ ‘move increasingly faster,’ ‘bounce along,’ ‘rest a short time,’ ‘rest a long time,’ and ‘roll.'”
